More of Residency...
So, I am definitely above the 80 hour work week. But don't tell my program. It's my own fault. I'm SO slow at everything! For example, I was on call last night and needed to write a simple order for Tylenol. Would you believe I got paged THREE times because I'd written the order incorrectly?!?

Then, there's the time I went to consent a mother for IMMUNIZATIONS but instead brought the consent for CIRCUMCISION and didn't catch my mistake until the mom said "why do they give the baby's shots down there?" Oh my, I leave you to imagine how I got out of that one.

Twice I've examined the wrong patient. Which isn't too bad except that one of the kids was so unstable she decided to brady and desat while I was listening to her lungs. I heard the alarms go off, and the nurse started looking a little nervous. I asked her, "can you turn that annoying beep off?" To which I was informed that with sats in the 50s, the baby not the "annoying beep" needed to be addressed. Oops. I guess that's what I get for seeing someone else’s patient uninvited.

Today was the climax. We switched attendings and I THOUGHT I heard the outgoing attending say I needed to ask Dr. Floy (not his real name) how to follow up a surfactant study and that Dr. Kim (not his real name either) was aware. Dr. Kim was the incoming attendant. So, on rounds this morning bright eyed and not so bushy tailed I told Dr. Kim that I would be talking with Dr. Floy about the surfactant study. I heard some titters behind me, but ignoring them, continued to go on about how Dr. Floy was very interested in surfactant deficiencies and would be happy to also talk to Dr. Kim. My attending looked a little bewildered and asked who "Dr. Floy" was as he had not heard of a Dr. by that last name. I was just getting ready to open my mouth to explain who I thought DR. "Floy" was when my eye caught my attendings name tag "Floy Kim." It would have been smart to quietly withdraw and not say anything more, but I was post call, and tried to convince Dr. Floy Kim, that I was sure there must be a physician whose last name was Floy because the previous attending had consulted him. "I am Floy, and the previous attending consulted ME!" was the reply. Oh dear, with both feet securly in my mouth, I decided not to attempt a reply.

All in all though, I LOVE NICU!!!

We had Jason, Janelle, and Stephanie here last weekend. It was so much fun! Thanks so much for coming. I miss all of our friends at AH.

Good talking to both of you on Sabbath. It's nice to be able to keep up with your lives to some extent through blogging. Keep us updated!
Rachel I am so glad you disclosed your messups. I thought that doctors were trained so well that they never get anything wrong! I kept imagining what it would be like to have a job where I didnt make mistakes. When I worked at Sea World, I gave misinformation often (not on purpose), although when I worked custodial I dont think I ever cleaned the wrong bathroom =)
It was great seeing you and Eric! It is neat to see God opening up ministry opportunities for you. He has placed you there for a reason (s)!

Rachel, glad that you love your program. I know you'll be good at it. You inspired me to write my first week of being a Kindergarten principal here. It'll be up soon on my blog. God bless

Those stories are so transparent! I loved reading about them. I'm not so scared to start third year now...and yet I am...oh well

May God bless you and Eric as you serve Him.
