I think it's about time I post something about what life is like as a pediatrician. I think, my version of what a constitutes a phenomenal pediatrician is slightly warped. Maybe because I've now had three people in the last month ask if I am out of my teens. One lady had the audacity to ask if I was even IN my teens yet. If empathy and identifiation with your patient population is a key to being a good pediatrician, I've got this skill down pat. On a brighter note, I've managed to keep from giving my patients the wrong consent, I haven't examined the wrong patient, and I think I haven't fallen asleep during morning report (yet...). Overall, it's going well. I'm just really bugged about the looking young thing. Just last week I was standing in line waiting for the all famous "cibalte" sandwich at the cafetteria (about the only thing a strict vegan can find to eat at the UC Davis cuisine). An older couple, trying to be nice, asked what I did. I said "I'm a doctor." They said, "oh, you must be a student doctor then?" No, I said "I'm a RESIDENT doctor." "You can't be, they said, you look like you should still be in highschool...." GREAT.... Then yesterday, one of my patient's dad asked how old I was. After telling him, he said, "I'd have NEVER guessed, you look like you should be in highschool." I just don't understand why people can't keep such comments to themselves. I certainly don't go around asking other people how old THEY are! I am wearing a long white coat and I'm signing my name with MD after it. Shouldn't that count for SOMETHING!!!!!!!

I think we've found a church. Eric and I really liked the LINCOLN AMAZING GRACE church. I think we'll have lots of opportunities to be involved.

Anyhow, I've written enough for one post. We love everyone lots. Come visit us!

Yeah, I get the looking-young thing alot, too...Think of it this way: How happy will you be to hear that when you are in your 60s? ("Wow, you don't look a day over 40!")

Miss you guys much, please come visit us!

Rachel - people are telling me I look young - and I have wrinkles! Okay, just one, but still. Also, people have always told me that I seem older than my age (I got asked at age 12 if my sisters were my children).

I think it is a gut reaction for the parents to question our age when we're lacking actual gray hair. And a cane.

Maybe if you carried a cane?

It's funny, this almost sounds like a post Lana would right. She has had the same frustration with her age appearance. When she is with our son Kole at a store, they think at times that she is an unwed teenage mother (young looking with no ring) : (

Have you considered dyeing your hair gray or something. : )

Glad to see you've found a church.

Rachel, I've been somewhat annoyed by the "looking-young thing" lately as well. Not only do nurses mistake me for a student, but some of my teeny-bopper moms are saying, "Wow, you look too young to be a doctor." Another annoyance is CONSTANTLY being mistaken for a nurse.
