Rachel and I had a long weekend together so I thought I'd share regarding it. Unfortunately, forgot the camara, so you'll have to imagine...
Friday morning, we left around 10am for Mount Shasta and the Guthrie's beautiful home. Rachel had had 1 hour of sleep and I had had 5, so I drove. Three hours, 30 minutes later Rachel had nearly approximated the amount of sleep I had had, I had listened to the book of Hebrews, Romans, and several Pathways of the Pioneers stories on my iPod and then we arrived!
The Guthries (as always) welcomed the bedraggeled residents with open arms. Their dog welcomed us too, but he had recently met a skunk, so we shunned his advances...
We took a short walk that afternoon, had a wonderful dinner, stayed up late talking, and then slept like the dead for nearly 10 hours. Sabbath breakfast was fabulous and off to church we went. I got to lead the SS song service with Janelle Guthrie and we did very well! When we started there were only three people in the congregation and when we finished we had added many precious wandering souls to the church... Or something like that. Maybe it was just time to start the lesson. SS lesson was great and the sermon was a musical couple from the Sacramento area (harp and cello). After church we ate a leisurely lunch of fabulous enchaladas, sweet potato, salad, and cornbread. Southeast meet Southwest. Dr. Guthrie ate fast and then went off to fix some broken bones. The rest of us left on a hike. It was a good thing he wasn't with us as will be seen below.
We took off up the mountain on a forest service road that was (literally, no exaggeration) about 45-50 degrees inclination for major portions of the climb. Just like stair climbing except more slippery and no hand-rails. After about one mile in 45 minutes, we reached the top of the ridge and followed it up and down similar hills for several more miles. Our goal was to cross the ridge and make our way down to lake Siskiyou on the other side. We finally reached a location where we could see the lake and did our best to follow the logging roads in that general direction. Once, we left the road to take a shortcut to avoid the long switchback. I increased my humility by being the only one to fall down when running down the final enbankment to the lower road. It wouldn't have been so bad had no William been so full of energy. The entire trip he was constantly running up and down the enbankments doing 180s, 360s, and pretending to ski/snowboard down the loose shale. He now (being the helpful chap he is) ran up the enbankment saying, "it's not hard, here, let me show you." He did, but I didn't follow his example very well. I ran down the 20 foot steep section well enough but then couldn't run fast enough to catch my balance on the road below and ended up ungracefully sprawled out on the road, unhurt, but much humbled. I think I'm getting old...
Anyway, after another several miles of hiking, we passed a couple gates and met a pick-up coming up the hill. We asked them how far lake Siskiyou was and were met with uncertain expressions. We assumed we were within 1-2 miles of the lake by now and planned to have Dr. Guthrie pick us up there. The informed us we had at least 5 miles to go. It was then 6:15pm. We had no flashlights or sufficient jackets for the evening. In addition, the evening Bible study started at 7pm at the Guthrie's house and the entire church was invited.
Thank God for cell phones. Dr. Guthrie did some mild off-roading in their Suburban following the directions the other pickup driver gave us and met us in 20 minutes. We were very happy to see him. We guessed our entire hike was about 10-12 miles. Melissa and Janelle went the distance with incredible endurance. Janelle (not sure why) decided to pack a backpack along with about 10lbs of gear. William had more energy at the end of the hike than the beginning.
That evening, Dr. Guthrie gave a nice introduction to the Parables of Jesus well adapted to the group of friends/church members/patients that gathered at their home. We again stayed up late talking and then slept another 10 hours (recurring theme?)
Sunday morning breakfast included french toast and lots of fruit. We enjoyed another short walk, well, Dr. and Mrs. Guthrie and Rachel and I walked while William and Janelle attempted many various stunts on their unicycle and bicycle respectively.
Thank you Guthries for such a warm and inviting home. We enjoyed every moment!
