Long time, no post...
I guess my last post was June 1 and here it is July 11! A lot has happened in the interim.
On the neighborhood front:
My neighbor kids are as cute as ever. They built quite an impressive fort on the side of the house (they are forbidden to go into the backyard anymore). If you use your imagination, you will find a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, and living room. The two kneeling figures are the 2 and 3 y/o performing their daily prayers--an essential part of the Muslim lifestyle (5 times/day, I believe). Yesterday they came over to play hide and seek (which is basically they ll hide and I will seek). Thankfully Eric wasn't home. He has difficulty with loud noises, constant arguing, in addition to the distress when watching dirt covered feet defile clean bed sheets as Shaheed hides under the covers. He thinks I'm crazy, but frankly I love it (usually). So back to the game. It started with me counting very loudly and slowly up to 10. While counting I heard random "bangs," "ouches" and a few doors slamming. All was quiet however when I begin the hunt. Manaaz was easy to locate--he'd tried hiding under a table that had no table cloth! A quick high powered chase and he was caught while trying to leap through the air to base (a big overstuffed chair in our living room). Shaheed was also easy--he came out when he heard the schreeks from Manaaz as he was being captured. Now for Nabela. I systematically looked through all the cupboards, drawers, closets, beds, curtains, and bathrooms. She had vanished. I finally had to enlist the aid of Manaaz. Together we scoured the house for a good 10-15 minutes. It seemed like she had evaporated--I assumed she must have hidden outside and gave up the search. Imagine my surprise when she emerged several minutes later from clothes closet. I had looked there at least twice, but little scamp, she hid behind a really long dress that matched her outfit! I probably even touched her without finding her!

Family and Friends:
WYC was wonderful! Great speakers, great food, great friends, great outreach! I was really blessed. All the sermons are available on audioverse.org. Afterwards, our good friends Curtis and Janine Farnham came. They stayed one night. It was so awesome to see them again. Rodney Abriol also paid us a visit. What a wonderful blessing--thanks for coming Rodney! Also Laurel Ann and Dr. Tim, thanks for eating post-WYC dinner with us!

Holidays:
July 4 was really special. Uncle George and Aunt Dena came to visit!!!! Aunt Dena insited that we needed a July 4 celebration. Unfortunately, as usual, my fridge was empty, so we had to do some quick shopping around. Thankfully, food stores stay open on July 4 and we were able to obtain ALL of the needed ingredients. Aunt Dena and I made salads, Uncle George carved the watermelon, and Eric made flags. Quite quickly we pulled together a really nice little meal complete with flags. Eric found some all American music (Aaron Copeland) which he played very loudly. Aunt Dena's only comment about the music was she wanted "melodious music" next time. All in all, however it was a very fun and festive time. Thanks so much, Uncle George and Aunt Dena, for visiting us.

Anniversary:
Eric and I celebrated our 5th anniversary on July 6. We celebrated the occasion at shinnyboo resort near Lake Tahoe. Thankfully, we were just above the smog/smoke from all the fires. We arrived Sabbath afternoon (after church in Truckie where Eric preached). The little cabins are so cute: large master bed, two smaller beds in a loft, bathroom, and tiny kitchonette. Sooooo cute! Unfortunately, we spent the majority of our stay sleeping! An hour nap on arrival, 10 hours that night, and another hour nap the next morning...we did do some hiking just before we left and we found a really nice little river to swim in (pictured below, our only picture together from the weekend!). The water was FREEZING!!!! but it was so hot outside that we rewarmed quickly and were in no danger of hypothermia.

Rotations:
I finished PICU and started 3rd year of residency, Eric finished Burns and started 2nd year of residency. Rachel's PICU ended with a bang--two simultaneous codes one opposite ends of the PICU, not a pleasant memory. I'm now on Adolescent Medicine and Eric's on general surgery.
I've heard it adolescent defined as "adults with less sense." Part of my rotation includes Juve hall. I've never in my life been in a locked down facility before, I was really scared my first day. However, I fell in love with the kids. They are great! I had so much fun. I'd consider it as a career choice but Eric won't hear of it (most of the kids weigh 2-3X as much as me and he's afraid I'll get flattened to the proportion of a pancake). Anyhow, I still have time to work on him...
That's about all for our updates. I'm listening to the Bible again on my iPod. If you don't have the dramatized Bible on your iPOD--get it! It's awesome!!! I'm already almost finished with Numbers and I started last week. Last time I did this it took me about 3 months to listen to the entire Bible--not long at all!
God bless and come and visit!
