Amy takes a tumble.
As a mother and a pediatrician, I've often wondered how I'd react if my child got hurt. Well, I had the perfect chance to see how'd I be this afternoon and basically, I'm a basket case. I had my 6 week OB appt today. Mom Nelson left this morning. Eric is on call and gone. So Amy and I ventured forth. I decided (unwisely apparently) to try and walk. Got Amy changed, beautified, and ready to go. I decided to take the stroller since I could put the diaper bag in it. Unfortunately, while locking the door, the stroller (not locked) rolled off our front porch, down four stairs, and landed UPSIDE DOWN on the concrete sidewalk. How Amy didn't fall out before it got to the bottom, only can be a miracle. She immediatly started screaming and so did mommy. I was sure I'd just killed my child (come on, dead kids can scream can't they?!?). Anyhow, I had my cell phone in hand and immediately called 911 while pulling my child out from under the stroller and doing my best to keep her in C-spine precautions. Poor baby, Her face was scraped and bleeding and she was letting the world know how unhappy she was. I felt AWEFUL. Ambulence and fire truck arrived in good time. They had me get her car seat so we could keep her in spinal precautions.
We took a 5 minute ride to UC Davis ED meanwhile me begging them not to rate this a "933 trauma" so Eric's pager wouldn't be activated (he's paged for all 933 traumas). Thankfully, most thankfully, she wasn't hurt enought to activate "trauma" status. The ED attending was so nice but after checking her out she disappeared to come back with her camera as she thought this HAD to make it into the pediatric department year end slide show :/
Baby Amy was observed 2 hours and then sent home. I walked all the way home carrying her in the car seat--yup no car when you ride in an ambulance. Now I'm home thanking God she was OK and wishing like everything someone else would raise this child for me!

When I finally got to bring Emily home (3 weeks old - we'd been at my mom's while waiting for frozen pipes to thaw and a car to be fixed) it was so tired and exhausted that I tripped on the sidewalk and somehow threw the car seat ahead of me, and it landed upside down. She was fine and I don't think she even cried.
Then that night I made the mistake of putting her to sleep on top of a folded quilt in her crib, she somehow rolled off of it and was face down in the corner of her crib between the mattress and padding. Talk about making your heart stop. Thankfully she was fine when I picked her up. I felt pretty incompetent!
Blessings and Enjoy your week!
