WHY
I've done a lot of posts about Amy's conversations. I don't mean to imply that Michael doesn't talk. He actually does. In fact, he talks a LOT. Way more than Amy ever did at his age. Perhaps it's because he has an older sibling, perhaps he has a more outgoing personality, who knows. At any rate, he loves to talk and in the last few weeks I've gotten to where I understand 80-90% of what he says. I enjoy conversing with him, most of the time. I say most of the time because a few days ago, he suddenly discovered the word "why." Now I remember Amy going through a "Why" stage. I think every child does. However, I don't remember her being quite as tenacious. I mean, she would ask it, but once she'd reached a terminal end to the question, she would stop.asking.why. Michael hasn't quite connected those neurons yet--he just keeps it going. And apparently, I keep thinking I'm talking to a rational 2 y/o. Part if it is I'm determined to never tell him to "stop asking." I do want to encourage intellectual curiosity. But, right now I'm wondering if I'm going a bit overboard.... For example....
Michael, eat your tomatoes.
"Why?"
Because they are good for you.
"Why?"
Because tomatoes contain vitamins and minerals that will make you grow strong.
"Why?"
Because God made them that way.
"Why?"
Because He loves us.
"Why?"
Because God is love.
"Why?"
Because that's who God is.
"Why?"
I've already answered that question.
"Why?"
Because you kept asking.
"Why?"
I don't know why you kept asking.....
"Why?"
Michael it's time to take a nap.
"Why?"
Because you are very tired.
"Why?"
Because your brain needs rest.
"Why?"
Because it's working so hard all day long.
"Why?"
Michael. You know, this conversation is going to delay your naptime. You must go to sleep right now.
"Why?"
Because you are very tired.
"Why?"
Because your brain needs rest. Wait, I just told you that. I've already answered this question. Good night....
"Why?"
Michael, you must finish all your food before you get more bread.
"Why?"
Because you have gotten into the bad habit of not eating all your food and then throwing it away.
"Why?"
I have no idea, you tell me why you've done this.
"Why?"
I JUST told you I don't know.
"Why?"
Because I don't know everything...
"Why?"
You get the picture....pray for my sanity.
