Hitting trouble

"Mommy," sobs Michael from the top of the stairwell. "I just did something and I don't want to tell you what I did!" He slowly makes his way down the stairs and I meet him at the bottom.
"Oh," I said, trying not to sound too concerned. "What happened?"
"Well, I did this to Amy!" He makes a hitting motion with his hand.
"You hit Amy?"
"Uh-huh." More sobs.
"Well thanks for telling mommy."
"And mommy," he doesn't wait for me to say more. "I already said sowwy."
By now Amy has come sauntering down the stairs. "Mommy, Michael already said sorry and I let him kiss the owee he gave me. It's all better and I FORGAVE him."
"Well that's very nice of you," I state. "But Michael, are we to EVER hit a girl?"
"No Mommy." He shakes his head vigorously.
"It's because I am FRAGILE and you are too strong." Amy says knowingly.
I decide not to start a discussion on the fallacy of that reasoning and continue with my discussion of our "no violence" policy. I can't really punish him because he did confess AND I'm not sure what actually happened upstairs. For all I know big sister could be manipulating this confession...At any rate, we have a prayer that Jesus will help us not to hit and then the two kids go happily back upstairs arms locked around each other as if nothing had ever happened.
